In a heartwarming display of appreciation and recognition, the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Union recently organized a momentous celebration of International Nurses and Midwives Day in Rukungiri on May 17, 2024. The event, marked by its grandeur and significance, brought together esteemed dignitaries from various professions to honor the tireless dedication of nurses and midwives across the nation. such as Hon. Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi the Minister of security, Religious clergy from different religions i.e Muslim, Catholic and Anglican brotherhoods, who graced the event with the lord’s word respectively.
Against the picturesque backdrop of Rukungiri, amidst rolling hills and lush greenery, the atmosphere was one of camaraderie and unity. Nurses and midwives, who are often the unsung heroes of healthcare, were rightfully celebrated for their selfless service and commitment to caring for others, especially during challenging times.
Central to this year’s (2024) International Nurses Day was the theme “Our Nurses. Our Future. The economic power of care” This theme and our IND report present an in-depth analysis of how elevating the nursing profession can catalyse transformative improvements in health care delivery, economic development, peace and societal well-being.
UNMU’s President, boldly criticised local governments for the frequent detention of nurses and midwives when patients’ lives are at stake.President Cherop’s impassioned address did not stop there. He as well demanded for a centralised health sector, citing unfavourable working conditions at local government levels that continue to hamper the efforts of dedicated healthcare professionals. His words resonated deeply with attendees, underlining the urgent need for systemic improvements to better support those on the frontlines of healthcare.
At the center of this commemoration was the Vice President of Uganda Rt. Maj. Jessica Alupo, gracing the occasion as the esteemed guest of honor. Amidst a gathering buzzing with gratitude and respect, the Vice President took on the crucial role of conveying a heartfelt message from the President of the Republic of Uganda H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni who hailed nurses and midwives for their life saving efforts and personal sacrifices amid medical risks.This message underscored the profound appreciation and unwavering support of the nation’s leadership for the invaluable contributions made by nurses and midwives in safeguarding public health and well-being.
The event was not just a ceremony but a reaffirmation of the importance of healthcare professionals in the fabric of society. It served as a reminder of their pivotal role in ensuring the health and happiness of communities, touching lives with compassion and expertise.
As the sun set over the horizon, casting a golden glow over the festivities, there was a palpable sense of pride and honor among all those present. The International Nurses and Midwives Day celebration in Rukungiri was a testament to the resilience and dedication of Uganda’s healthcare workforce, who continue to make a profound difference in the lives of countless individuals every day.
